Don't Give Away Your Images!

I've had two clients recently that I had to explain how the real world of photography works and the reasons why they need to pay me for my creative time and for the licensing and usage rights to my photos and why I own them under copyright law.

I contantly tell people about copyright law and how licensing is a standard practice in the industry and any photographer that doesn't charge licensing fees in addition to creative fees is not a professional and does not care about the industry.

I point people to the ASMP pdf on my website about hiring an assignment photographer.

I highly encourge you to become a member of ASMP and follow standard industry practices if you are doing anything outside of portraits to hang on someones wall.

I joined ASMP a little over a month ago and already went to one of their sponsored workshops on Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom.

Great organization. I look forward to its networking possibilities as well as professional support. If you join as a student you get a free copy of their ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography book as well.

Being listed on the ASMP website as a member has definitely brought me work as I'm the only one listed in Nevada last I checked.
