Another Senior

Another high school senior - got another one next week. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to shake that "Hallmark Look" when I'm in the studio. :) Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hey Jason,
Nothing wrong with a technically good images but I know what you mean.
Since we can do it in our sleep we want something different.
I find with clients I go with what I know works and sells and with my own stuff I try to do something different, it may fail or I may come out with a rock start image.
Give yourself some play time with new forms of light and think outside of your trained instinct. - At September 28, 2007 7:24 PM, matt stauss said...

hey Jason.....I feel ya man!! Finding your own look is tough, but its like finding a great pair of jeans. Sometimes you have to try a couple of pairs on before you find a pair you dont want to take off. My best advice is....COPY OTHER PEOPLES LOOK!! =P Its the best way to find out how you like to shoot and what turns on your creative juices. Dont be afraid to blatantly rip off another's look untill you find what you like. If you think about it.....to some extent we as photographers all shoot the same to some extent; our personal style sets us apart.

Matt and Wayne,
Juat to let you know, I did not post the picture. I was mearly commenting on that I think the "Hallmark" look is great. I personally don't have a problem thinking outside the box. Just look at some of my post on hipsters.
Kameron did a great job on the images. - At September 29, 2007 10:38 AM, Wayne Wallace said...

Kameron,
That image is great...especially for a senior portrait. I wouldn't consider that a Hallmark shot. Yes, it's using the lighting techniques found at school, BUT it is not a typical senior portrait. It evokes a feeling that seems to perfectly captures today's high school student. Not necessarily "pretty," but provoking. I think it's got your name all over it.

I know what your talking about... I had this same problem, and sometimes still do. Ive just been shooting friends alot, it doesnt pay but I can call them anytime and they will do want I want. Sometimes I ask them to think of a pic they might want, just for a differnt view. It has been very helpful in working any kinks out of a situation I might no be familar with.

Thanks everyone for your comments... it's been helpful in hearing what others think (I miss that direct feedback from people in the "know" - i.e. Hallmark teachers and students). I think the perspectives of other people are so valuable.
I'd love to hear more about how different people have developed or found their own photographic voice. I still struggle with identifying (or finding) that in my own work. Maybe someone sees something I'm missing.
Thanks!
