Class of 08- The First Week
Thursday, September 13, 2007
The first thing that you do when you get to Hallmark on the first day of orientation is get your picture taken.
We could already tell it would be an amazing ten months.
The building is as fresh, new, and beautiful as ever with the incredibly noticeable addition of reclining bucket seats in the auditorium as seen on the Hallmark website.
The next three days would be our introduction to the program with a juggler/motivational speaker, opening guest photographers Barbara Bordnick and Gary Land, and all the rules and regulations we could possibly take. We had beautiful weather for Camp Hallmark and got our first hands on experience with our soon-to-be cameras before a cookout dinner.
After a weekend of getting together with new people we had become friends with in the past three days we got down to work on Monday. My group, the "O" group, got our cameras first thing that morning. The Mamiya 645 AFDII. Momma Mia!
Today was the field trip to Old Deerfield to shoot our very first two assignments.
It felt good to get out there and shoot all day.
Some left frustrated and some left thrilled with what they had done but something tells me that no matter how tough and new it was for some, these would be the classmates that would share my ten months. This was the group that will help each other to no end when crunch time hits. These will be the people who will shape each others lives as photographers and bounce endless inspiration back and forth as we have already with some of our own personal work.
As the first week of classes is coming to a close, I think most of us came to the same conclusion that we were at the best photographic school and our instructors knew what they were doing. From a teacher that is anal about his computer lab to one who makes jokes about poor undeserving Tammy. From classmates that have already bonded to classmates who will be bonding in the months to come. From a ridiculously abbreviated mandatory-voluntary photo contest to a computer lab that is less than a week old to realizing that you will never look at a photograph the same way again...This is going to be a great year.
Cheers. To the class of '08!

I admit, I got a little emotional reading your post. Just remember, no matter what, trust yourself & trust the decision you made to go there and you won't regret a thing. It goes by quick, so take everything in and don't waste a minute! - At September 14, 2007 10:49 PM, Romo Photography said...

I love the photos, loved your thoughts and welcome you and all of your fellow classmates. You are in for a wonderful 10 months that you will not regret. Take full advantage of the camera because it's a priviledge in your young career to have it.
Enjoy! Judging from your images, I know you will do good. You've already explored and been to the Mill. :-)
