Ok, so this is my first post, and I thought I would use my "childhood fear" picture to start it off. I would greatly appreciate advise on a few things. I am having a lot of trouble with seeing the best light, I don't quite understand what the best light is. We were using the reflectors the other day, and of course I used the gold side because that was the only way I could see the light. Unfortunately it was really sunny out, and I am a little worried that maybe on film it will be blown out. We haven't gotten our film back yet for that. I also seem to be having trouble getting the right exposure with my direction of light. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Hi Jessica,
I like your image. Thanks for posting.
You will learn to see the light. Think directional light, of course north light is best, find some shelter and use the light like you would in the studio - At September 25, 2007 7:20 PM, Glenn Bashaw said...

Hi Jessica,
Glad you posted.
You will begin to see the light. I personally love to work on the edge of shade.
It sounds kind of hokey but also when out just walking around look at the trees and even your own hand in front of you. See where the light is wrapping aound the tree giving it depth and texture. Is your hand have a slight glow to it.
It will come to you sooner than you think. - At September 25, 2007 9:05 PM, Sarah Lynn said...

Hey Jessie, I really like this photo. Reminds me of something I would do. And I agree with the guys, it just takes some time getting used to, but you'll start to see everything differently.. it's especially annoying when you can't even watch a movie without picking at the lighting haha.

My advice would be to go easy on yourself - it's only phase 1!
One thing you can do is have someone physically point out to you the light and shadows on an image. A couple times of doing that, and you'll begin to see what they see out in the real world.
Enjoy your year!
