Working with windo light
Wednesday, October 3, 2007
Most of these photos where taken with a Pentax K1000 and my Pentax smc 50mm 1.7 MF. I used Fuji Supra asa 400 color film. The lady with the red umbrella was shot with a K100D 18-55 kit lens. Photos where taken in one of 4 places
1. my old 1 bedroom apartment ( very small place)
photos, 2, 4,8,9,10,11
2. an old trane station
photos, 1, 5, 6,
3. a space I rented for a couple of years
photos, 7,
4. where I live now
photos, 3
I am hoping that I can give some people some ideas on working with limed space and lighting. I have found that when working with windo lighting is time of day getting to know what time of day is important to what you are shooting. This depends on the windo (s) you are using. I find that using a soled color wall, sheat, blacket, or peace of fabrick.
You can not move the light but you can controle it. I used blined, and l also bought a poole that I hung shower courtens on. A yellow, white, and black. I have also used the blinds that where on the windos. And also a blanket or sheat. The shower coutens help controle the lighting and the color ones act like gells when you need them. They also can look like soft boxes. I find that the best lens to use is my Pentax smc 50mm 1.7 MF ( vitage 1970) it allowed me to work in limed space and light ie… the photo of the man with the maudlin, he was standing on my couch in my living room, witch was very small. The photo of the man with the hat and cote was shot in my hallway with light coming from my bathroom.
With having limted room there is limed things that I could do with a persons body or using props so I tried to do the best I could with fashal experstions and to drow the attion there. One thing I do to achive this is to have people where dark soled clothes. Thuse making the face the the britest thing in the photo. I have also used a gobo. Not one in frount of the camera but in PS I slect the lower part of the photo put on sepret layer in corves make it darker and gosen blur it the erace out what I do not need. This also helps get the vewer to look at the face.

HI Nathan,
Thanks for sharing. I love that you are sharing these less technical shots using just the simple tools and spaces that were available.
We all need to do more of this type of creative thinking and rely less on all the new fancy studio gear and more on the simple act of creating images and painting with natural light.
I personally am going to start trying to push my clients into more of this style of work. - At October 3, 2007 10:41 AM, Faith Dugan Photography said...

yep when people that wont to get in to photography i tell them to get some thing like a Pentax K1000, Nikon F3, Cannon AE-1 ect.. and a GOOD fast older 50mm heck the way good Medom format cameras are priced get one of them ( i was offerd 2 Mymea 645 bodys a 80 on each and a 180mm, and a nether lens i forgot witch 5 220 backes and other goodys for 900$ the other day, heck i bet you could get better evin)
but the idea is that these cameras will teach you to think before you shoot. and teach a person how to use a camera not just spray and pray. and there so virstill with a good fast 50 if need be i could shoot about any thing with one ( with a bit of thinking lol)
also these cameras are soooo durble hell my K1000 will be passed to my grate grand kids and still work grate and i got it used my self (50$)
also think of this your shooting a weding or BIG news story you forgot to charge you batserys, the card gos bad ect... having that all maunal camera may save your but. and my K1000 has. (i was using a barrowed D70 and the battery had gone bad)
say that your at a weding and uncal bob knocks over your lights and they stop working knowing how to use a windo may mean that you get payed. so keep in mind where they are and what kined of light is comming throw them it only takes a minet or that is why you pay an asstent lol.
i hope that hallmark still teaches how to use film this has ben such a benfit and if some one copared my photos to other photoj in my area that only have used digital there is a difference, i am able to pull good photos out of bad suations. i also hope that they are still teaching retuching with dies and brushes (i was BAD and HATED it) but that trannng is VALBLE in my shooting and in my digtal retouching.
