Equipment Questions

I have a Qflash and a canon 580. I would like to use these at weddings together, with the q flash as my key, canon as my fill, but how do I get them to sync together?
I read about the new Qnexus product but it works with canon's IR and I'd rather have something that can work even if multiple people are standing between me and the qflash.
Do I have any other options?

I would say Pocketwizard...OR, you could see if the Canon has some sort of "optical slave" mode like the Nikon SB-800 does (called SU-4 mode). In the case of the Nikon, you set your flash manually and then fire your key and the light from the key firing triggers your slave, in your case, the Canon flash. The only problem with this is that ANY flash that it sees that's strong enough will make it fire...not a good idea at a wedding or the like.

why mess with the qflash, I hate those things, just buy another 580 or 550 of ebay or a transmitter if you want to do off camera flash.
my standard setup for a wedding is a 580 on a flash bracket and a 24-105 and maybe a wide in my pocket.
at least when I shot 2-4 weddings a day at Bellagio that was standard setup, they bought plenty of pics and albums and I was as light and mobile as possible.
These were all shot that way

two weeks ago i did an event with q-flash and 580. you have to use pocket wizards to get them to sync. it appears that they sync by themselves when doing test shots--but if you look at your preview, you will see they are dark.

I think I was the oddball out but I love my Qflash - the new ones are pretty small compared to the ones we used at school! Mine isn't that much bigger than a 580
Yea Josh, I thought about a peanut slave but not at a wedding, my flash would be dead before we were five minutes into then!
Hey Tamee, how'd you shoot with the pocket wizard and the flash? On a bracket? - At January 16, 2008 10:29 PM, Wayne Wallace said...

we had the monster qflashes at the B but I refused and said I want a canon flash for my 1DS not some monster aparatus!
Now, those Qflashes do put out some light but man what a pain! If you're running a fast paced gig, all the shots you can take in an hour then flash on bracket is the way to go. - At January 16, 2008 11:15 PM, Wayne Wallace said...

Quantum makes a device called the freewire. It is somewhat like the pocketwizards. I shot a wedding with Dan Doke and he used them. The lighting was amazing with it. The only time to use it is at the reception. Dont even try to do it during the ceremony. It would be beyond disctracting.

kim, we use velcro--the soft stuff on either the pocket wizard or flash and the rough stuff on the other one
