Jacquie, I would check with a portrait instructor, like Lisa or Rich to make sure this is "low key" enough to be Low-Key Male. Just make sure this is dark enough to pass the assignment. I believe the light needs to be a 3 or 4 stop difference, and this looks like a 2 stop to me. But it could just be my monitor.
I love the light on your subject. I love kick-light. - At March 18, 2008 8:03 AM, DragonHare said...

Hey Jacquie!
I really like his expression - he looks like a big teddy bear!
I'd burn down his forehead and shirt a little tho - his forehead is the brightest part of the image which is where your eye is going to go to first. Also, for me, his shirt is really fighting with his face because his shirt is about the same brightness as his face - tone down the shirt, you really want that face to be the brightest area.
I was taught a trick last year - rotate the image 180 degrees, close your eyes while ps does this and open them, note where your eye travels to when you first look at the image. If its not the face/eyes, then burn/dodge until you get it right!
Keep working hard, I've been enjoying all the work from this year's students!

I didn't use a fill light and it was over 3 stops..but I edited it on my lap top....so I don't know what it really looks like.
My low key male already was accepted (a different picture than this one). But it was of a guy that has been photographed about 30 times at Hallmark. Rich told me I really should try to get someone else in my portfolio.
This is my fiance. He is here visiting me from California. I was practicing on him. hee hee. Don't know if I will use it. Knowing me I will re-shoot at lest 3 or 4 more times. But I think he looks cute...so I am keeping it for me :-)
I really dont know if I edited it correctly I will know when I get to school and take a look at it on a calibrated monitor.
Thanks guys!
ps he is a teddy bear
