I like your third shot and your depth of field.
I would be careful with your horizon, you don't want it cutting through at the neck.

Hi Alyssa,
You have a great start here. There are some things you might consider. Remember as the photographer you are responsible for everything in your photo, casting, styling, location, light, expression, perspective, blah, blah, blah. The whole kit and kaboodle. If something is not right the burden is on you to correct it.
In the shot of the woman looking over the shoulder, her hair is not as neat as it could be. The gentleman on the rock his pose looks somewhat awkward. I probably would have placed him up higher on the apex of the rock. That way his left arm would be more relaxed and his pose a bit more natural.
Remember you have 360 degrees to work with around your subject and a variety of perpectives and angles. USE THEM ALL. Explore the scene all around the subject. Shoot high, shoot medium, shoot low, shoot extremely low. Shoot from afar, shoot close in, tilt your camera, use telephoto lenses, use a wide angle, use a fisheye lens, etc, etc. You can get multiple images from one pose simply by changing your position and perspective or even your lens.
Normally your first idea comes from what's comfortable to you. Challenge yourself by refusing to take that shot until you have explored other options outside of your comfort zone. Start pushing the envelope now and it will come naturally to you later in the year.
Remember you have 360 degrees to work with around your subject. Explore it and use it.
Keep posting. I think you are off to a great start. :) - At October 8, 2008 10:01 AM, Jenny Minard said...

Alyssa,
Mark is right on with his comments, but to go one step further, keep in mind that when you are in the business of people that they will love the image if THEY look good. So, you must pay close attention to the hair - it must be neat. Look at the eyes, are they drawing your attention. Try having him or her gaze off to one side. Try a lot of different poses with just the eyes. High angles will make heavier woman look slimmer. Lower angles are bad for the chins, but definitely experiment.
During my 10 months, I made the mistake of ending a shoot before I had lots of different shots. Try to get a dozen at least, and then take them to the instructors. They will help you out a lot!
I agree with Mark about the image of the man on the rock. He does not grab my attention. He almost blends in with the rock. You are responsible for his clothing, not him. It's your assignment. People will buy pictures of themselves no matter what they decide to wear, but you will have a stronger body of images if you take control.
Take care, good luck, and keep posting.
