Hi Kristi,
Nice job.
Were these film based?
They look a little on the dark side so you could probably open up your exposure a stop or two and increase your depth of field in the shot.
You left room for advertising copy which is a good thing to consider when doing shots esp on film that won't be knocked out.
I look forward to seeing your work progress. - At October 6, 2008 3:55 AM, K. Dalton said...

They are actually taken with the aptus back.
Thanks Wayne! - At October 6, 2008 7:09 AM, Mark Denman said...

Kristi,
I think you are on of the first (if not the first) current student to post anything. Congratulations!!! (the confetti, streamers and balloons are falling now :))
I agree with Wayne they do look a tad bit dark. That's an easy fix though. If you all are in Photoshop yet this is a minor curves adjustment to brighten it up a little bit. You could also set your ISO setting on your meter lower than the ISO setting in camera to brighten the scene
(ie. meter/camera ... 32/50 ... 80/100) ***NOTE*** If they haven't told you about that yet, ask about it before you do it.)
The images themselves are great. I like to location you chose for your product shot. It really works with the product name. Your portrait shots are really nice also. One thing though. The portraits appear to have a fair amount of gaussian blur done on the skin. If so use that sparingly and don't over do it. The portfolio judges weren't too pleased with this during portfolio review last year.
Keep it up Kristi and keep posting. - At October 6, 2008 8:46 AM, K. Dalton said...

I really enjoy your bottom portrait. Nice work! My constructive criticism would be to watch the color - it appears to be on the green side (especially in the shadows).

Very poorly lit.
Need to learn how and when to apply depth of field.
The biggest problem I see with students shooting digital, is they rely on the camera to do all of the work.
Learn to meter, learn color temp,
Learn how to light.
learn how to use a film camera first, then learn digital. - At October 10, 2008 12:51 PM, Wayne Wallace said...

Hey Mr. Anonymous
Take it easy on Kristi, this may be one of her first times shooting a camera as Hallmark doesn't require any previous experience and it's only her 5th week at school and she's shooting with a camera you'll probably never touch a medium format with a leaf digital back, not just a point and shoot.
If you're so good why don't you post your name and some of your work and we will critique it. - At October 11, 2008 9:58 AM, K. Dalton said...
