Fargo Flood 2009
Friday, March 27, 2009
I live in Fargo, North Dakota and we are currently experiencing the biggest flood in the history of North Dakota. I have left my home and am staying at a hotel right now but a little over a thousand people have been evacuated. The flood is expecting to crest at 42 feet on Saturday and potentially get to 43 feet. Over 3 million sandbags have been filled since Monday. We've had thousands of volunteers working 24 hours a day since Monday, working to protect the city. It's pretty amazing watching the community that you live in come together to save not only the city, but people individual homes when they have never even met them before. Yesterday I went out with a few friends to photograph some of the things going on. You have to be careful to not get in anyone's way or stand on top of the levees as they have already arrested 10 people for doing just that. One guy was even from CNN! They are afraid that if people stand on the levees that they might fall into the river or break part of the levee so it's pretty serious. Anyway, here are some pictures I took yesterday. Also check out my friends' site as he has been out every day this week. www.davearntson.net
